Character Dialogue

As many of you know, I teach 5th grade. One of my favorite things to teach is writing. I'm currently teaching my kids how to write dialogues. Their criteria is to create two characters with differing opinions, and write a dialogue between the two. I had a lot of fun creating my example. Check it out and tell me what you think.

A Very Fishy Dialogue
By: Mrs. Marsh

Goldie splashed around her bowl, while Pablo swam just outside in the Pacific Ocean. Goldie, seeing Pablo from the window began to boast, "I just love eating these yummy fish-flakes!" She eagerly took a monstrous bite out of the bright orange flake.

"Those are disgusting!" shouted Pablo in response as he made a gagging face.

"Well at least I am fed three meals a day! You, on the other hand, have to search the entire ocean for one measly meal! I bet your little fishy guts are rumbling right now!" teased Goldie.

"What? What's that you say? I can't hear you through all your glass!" shouted Pablo, as he put a cupped fin to his ear.

"Very funny! You're such a fish-face!" shouted Goldie angrily.

"Fish-face! Who you calling fish-face?" splashed Pablo. "This calls for a good old fashion fish-face-off!"

Just as Pablo was getting ready to jump through the window and into Goldie's bowl, a fisherman trapped him in his net. "Dang it!" cried Pablo. "I'm a goner!"

"Ha, ha!" Goldie laughed as she pointed and chuckled at Pablo. "See you at the Sushi-bar!"

A few hours later, Goldie heard her human walking over to the fish tank. "Oh thank goodness. I'm so famished! More fish-flakes!" she bubbled as she rubbed her tummy and peered out the glass.

Goldie's human tapped the bowl and said, "Look Goldie, I brought a friend for you! Now you won't be so lonely. I bought him down at the pier. Got a good price for him too!"

Just then, a clear, plastic bag came into view. With a splash, Pablo flopped into the tank right next to Goldie.

Pablo grinned and cracked his fin-knuckles.

"Uh-oh" quivered Goldie.

Splash, bang, plop!

  1. I think you meant to say, "I just love eating these yummy fish-flakes!"

Other than that, it's really cute!

  2. Cute; you've got the ticket - get them to start w/something silly, something funny and let them have a go.

  3. That was great! It would be fun to illustrate. I'd love to see that last scene.
